All motocross riders are coming off and there are certain pieces of protective gear that you are going to need. Motocross shorts are one of these and
AlpineStars Bionic Freeride Shorts are the best padded motocross shorts for 2023. Offering padding and protection in the all the right places, you will feel well protected be equally as comfy in a pair of these well priced shorts.
Hip protection is something I can personally recommend because a bruised hip is not only very painful, it seems to take ages to heel and get back to normal. Getting yourself a pair of padded shorts will give your hips, thighs and tailbone impact protection when doing motocross.
Lets have a look at a few different options and what they offer the rider.

1. AlpineStars Bionic Freeride Shorts
At the top of the pile for being the best value for the protection and comfort these shorts have to offer. More protection then most other shorts, great for hardcore riders
Key Features:
- Designed for max protection whilst being super flexible and very comfy
- Mesh body constructed out of Lycra
- High impact padding to the Hip, Thigh and Tailbone
- Additional padding from PU inserts which reienforce the padded areas and give what they call abbrasive protection
Price:
These Alpinestars retail around the $80 mark. On the Alpine website they state $90 but on places like Amazon you can pick them up, new, for $79 last time I checked. You can check the latest Amazon price here.
2. AlpineStars Sequence Pro Shorts
Another decent pair of shorts from Alpinestars but with a higher price tag which put this down to second position in my opinion. I really like this brand but just think I would opt for other options like the Alpinestars Bionic Freeride in position 1 and save some cash before paying more money for a very simliar product. That said there are a couple of points worth making. The first is that these are made with the longer/all day type rider in mind so if this is you then maybe you would buy these over the bionics. Second is they are obviously designed for pro riders, as the title suggests. They therefore fit well under motocross clothing with comfort.
Key Features:
- Great padding to hips, thighs and tailbone
- Highly breathable mesh shell to keep the rider cool
- Designed with the long rider in mind.
Pricing:
Well priced in the market and you can get them for $80 from Amazon. Click here to check the latest price
3. Troy Lee Designs 5605 Shorts
Second on the list these shorts make this spot due to their pricing mainly. With a little less protection these make up for it with their unrestricted motion for the rider. They also have a crotch pad!
Key Features:
- Great fitting
- Brilliant comfort
- VENT-TRAC for air flow which assists in cooling the rider
- Outer Thigh Pads for protetcion
Price:
As mentioned above these shorts can be purchased from Amazon for around $50 – $55 which is a great price point. Check the latest price on Amazon here
4. Fox Racing Titan
A close contender to position 2. This well known brand offers the required padding in the right areas. Reasonable pricing and decent reviews. The only negative I have found repeated a few times is the fitting is quite right for one reason or another.
Key Features:
- Molded foam hip pads
- Hip, Thigh and Tailbone Protection
- Reasonable price
Price:
I think they have priced this product well for what they are offering. Expect to pay around $60
5. Leatt 3DF 5.0 Padded Shorts
These provide upper hip, thigh and tailbone protection but are arguably priced a little on the high side when compared to other shorts listed here.
Key Features:
- Upper hip, thigh and tailbone protection
- Extra large elasticated waist band for comfort
- Silicone printed elestic leg cuffs
Price:
You may be able to find this from an online store cheaper if they have a discount/sale on but other wise expect to pay around the $100.
