How Many Gears Does A Honda XR80 Have?

In my opinion the XR series is legendary and the XR80 reminds me of my childhood days. Playing on my mates XR80 was a highlight, being allowed to ride it around his field where we attempted to make jumps and trails.

I have recently purchased a Honda XR70 for my 3 boys who are all of an age where they can start to enjoy riding.

The Honda XR80 has 5 gears and is an ideal dirtbike for children and smaller riders, offering a seat height of 726cm. These little 4 stroke dirtbikes are single cylinder and have a fuel tank capacity of 6.8L.

How Long Was The XR80 In Production?

This little dirtbike was popular and saw a production run of 24 years, starting in 1979 and ending in 2003. In that time 4 generations were released and mulitple colour and graphic changes within the same time period.

The first XR80 that came out was only available on Tahitian Red, that was in ’79 and apart from a difference in the shade of red, that was the case until ’87 when they introduced their Shasta White colour alongside the red.

Throughout the years Honda has played with the colour schemes, with different combos but all stick to their well known colours. Red, White and Blue.

What Came Before The XR80

Previous to the Honda XR80 was the XR75. This was manufactured from 1973-1978 has many similarities. It looks alot more old fashioned and had a top speed of 40mph.

The XR70 however didn’t come to market until 1997 and ended production in 2003. The one I recently bought was 1998.

How Much Does An Honda XR80 Weigh

The XR80 weighs just under 70Kg, 69.9kg to be exact. Thats dry weight meaning there is no fuel in the tank. The total wet weight for an XR80 would be approx. 75kg if there was fuel in the tank.

How Much are XR80’s Worth Today

XR’s in general are increasing in price due to demand and the fact they are not manufactured anymore. Well apart from the XR650 that Honda are currently offering.

EBay is probably the best place to keep your eyes peeled for one although you dont see them to often.

Previously sold xr80’s have sold on eBay for an average of £750. A professionally restored 1982 bike went for £1100 whilst good condition bikes from the 80’s and 90’s are selling for £600 – £700

In the US, eBay pricing is similar. A 1981 model sold for $1800 recently (around £1300)

Pricing for different XR models will depend on a couple of main factors. Firstly how many of them were made. So for the XR75 for example the production run was only 5 years so obviously would of made alot less when compared to the 24 year production run of the XR80.

Secondly the desirability of the bike will effect the price. The XR80 in my opinion is more ‘wanted’ than the xr75 so that would push the price up.

At the time of writing this post in the UK only 2 xr80’s are on the road. Although this isn’t an indication of how many where made because it wasn’t made as a road bike it can be an indicator of how rare they might be.

How Fast Does A Honda XR80R Go?

Obviously there are many different factors that will dictate the actual top speed but it is listed to have a top speed of 49mph.

Mind you if you heading down hill with the wind on your back you may even exceed that.

To be honest though, 49mph is plenty fast enough for most, considering the majority of these bikes are riden by children. Also riding them off road which means top speed isn’t always the first thing you look for.

What Is The Maximum Weight Capacity Of A Honda XR80

The 2003 model handbook states that the maximum weight capacity for the XR80 is 220lbs which is 100kg.

If you have a different year then it will be worth checking the owners handbook if you can get hold of one.
